Buying an instrument

The most common question we get asked when buying a musical instrument is: “How much should we spend on it?” The answer is always: the best you can afford for your budget.

Please note that model numbers and prices change frequently. All model numbers and prices listed below are correct as of November 2025.

Keyboard / Piano – JPFK/PFK Courses

Minimum Requirements:

  • At least 61 full-sized keys

  • Touch sensitive

Once students reach PFK Book 2 (after JPFK 1/2/3 and PFK1), we use a switch/sustain pedal to change sounds and add sustain for piano pieces. Entry-level keyboards may not support a sustain pedal, but plenty of practice is done during lessons regardless.

In-Studio Equipment: Our studio keyboards are suitable up to Grade 8 and beyond. These models (now discontinued) can be found second-hand for approximately £400+ on eBay, Facebook Marketplace, etc.

Examples:

  • PSR 710
